Privacy Policy
Effective July 10, 2026
SonoStream ("the app") plays audio files already stored on your Android device to your own Sonos speakers over your local network. This page explains what data the app accesses and how it's used.
Short version: your music library and files never leave your device or your local network. We don't run a server that stores your files, your listening history, or any personal profile about you.
Local media library access
The app requests permission to read audio files stored on your device (Android's media/storage permission) solely to list and play the files already on your phone. This happens entirely on your device — SonoStream does not upload your files, filenames, or metadata to any server we operate.
Local network access & playback
The app uses Wi-Fi and local network permissions to:
- Discover Sonos speakers on your Wi-Fi network, using the standard UPnP/SSDP discovery protocol Sonos speakers already broadcast.
- Run a small web server on your device that streams your chosen audio files to your Sonos speakers.
This server is reachable only from other devices on your own local network — it is never exposed to the internet, and no one outside your Wi-Fi network can reach it.
Album art lookups
To show cover art, the app sends the artist, album, and/or track name of what you're browsing or playing to a couple of external services — never the audio file itself, and no personal information beyond that text:
- Apple's iTunes Search API — tried first for commercial releases.
- MusicBrainz and the Cover Art Archive — used as a fallback when iTunes has no match (e.g. independent or fan releases).
These are independent third-party services with their own privacy practices: Apple, MusicBrainz, Internet Archive (Cover Art Archive).
Crash and error reporting
The app uses Firebase Crashlytics, a Google service, to automatically receive a report if the app crashes or hits an error, so bugs can be fixed. These reports can include your device model, OS version, app version, and a technical stack trace — not your music library, files, or anything you were playing. See Google's privacy policy.
Purchases
The one-time "Pro" unlock is purchased and processed entirely through Google Play Billing. We never see or store your payment details — Google handles the transaction and only tells the app whether the purchase succeeded. See Google Play's terms.
Data stored on your device
Settings such as whether Pro is unlocked, your last-played track, and any playlists you create are stored locally on your device using Android's standard app storage. This data is not sent to us, and is removed automatically if you uninstall the app.
Website analytics
This website (not the app) counts visits using GoatCounter, a privacy-friendly analytics service: no cookies, nothing stored on your device, and no personal profile — only aggregate statistics such as pages viewed, referrers, browser type, and country. The counter is skipped entirely if your browser signals Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control.
What we don't do
- No account or sign-in is required or offered.
- No ads.
- We don't sell or share your data with third parties for advertising.
- We don't track you across other apps or websites.
Children's privacy
SonoStream is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
